The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to backing the Ghana Police Service as it works to eradicate vigilantism and promote higher standards of professionalism across the rank and file.

Delivering his address at the official opening of the Police Regional Commanders’ Conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra, the Minister recalled that the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999) clearly renders all vigilantism activities illegal. He stressed that under no circumstances should such elements be tolerated within the country’s socio-political space.

Assuring regional commanders of maximum state support to rigorously enforce the law, Mr Mubarak further directed an immediate halt to the unauthorized filming and public circulation of recruits currently undergoing police training.

“Training schools allowing videos and other content of recruits undergoing training to be recorded and shared on social media — this practice must stop,” he declared.

The Interior Minister reiterated that police training depots are dedicated institutions meant to instill discipline and foster core professional values. “They must not become platforms for content that compromises the privacy, dignity, or security of trainees,” he noted.

On his part, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, observed that the high-level conference comes at a crucial juncture when members of the public are demanding far greater accountability and visibility from law enforcement agencies.

“Ghanaians are not asking for perfection; they are asking for presence. They are asking for professionalism,” the IGP pointed out, adding that such public expectations represent “the minimum standards of a modern police service” that commanders must continuously strive to achieve.

COP Yohuno emphasized that the police administration does not work in a silo, but remains a fundamental pillar of the broader national security framework. He called on officers to appreciate the inter-agency collaboration required to keep the nation safe, noting that the ultimate success of the service hinges on a clear understanding of how all state security apparatuses operate in unison.
