Work on a major drainage project along the Dr Busia Highway in Kaneshie is set to begin on Monday, 7th September 2026.
The Project Coordinator for the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) initiative, Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, announced the upcoming works during a special media briefing.
The project will see the construction of a 10-metre-wide, double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain stretching across 1.95 kilometres from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction.
The new infrastructure is designed to replace the existing twin 1.2-metre diameter pipe drains along the route, which have proven inadequate for managing major surface runoff.
Dr Sarfo explained that the prospective drain will link up with the recently completed drainage section inside the Accra Academy campus on one end, and connect directly to the existing main drain at Pamprom Junction on the other.
Construction works are scheduled to run from September 2026 through to October 2027.
He stated that given the scale and location of the works, temporary road closures along sections of the Dr. Busia Highway will be unavoidable.
He explains that the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, working closely with the Department of Urban Roads, has therefore developed a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan to ensure that traffic continues to flow safely and efficiently throughout the construction period.
