Ghana has recorded a significant improvement in national security compared to 2025, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has stated.
Addressing the media at the Government Accountability Series Press Conference at the Presidency in Accra, the Minister commended the security agencies for their dedicated service to the nation.
He noted that President John Dramani Mahama remains deeply appreciative of their efforts, saying, “sometimes running away from your families for days to keep our country safe”.
“We are much safer, and we can’t go out for all the sacrifices that you and your men and women are making so that you keep this country safe.”
Touching on security interventions, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak revealed that conflict-prone areas under curfew peaked at 11 locations, including Binduri, Bimbila, Bomaa, and Walewale. However, stability has largely been restored, leaving only three active curfews with relaxed hours.
“Our wish is to make sure that we are almost a country without a single community being restricted. But we are left with three curfews, and even the three, you can see the timing to tell you that the situation has drastically improved,” he explained.
He highlighted that the curfew in Bawku now runs from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am (22:00 to 05:00 hours). He further announced that as of Monday morning, the government had lifted the restriction on motorbike movement and adjusted general movement hours from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm (06:00 to 18:00 hours) to help restore normal life.
The Minister credited the National Peace Council for facilitating dialogue between factions in Bawku, adding that grant support from the Japanese Government is aiding the peace process.
He listed Sampa—where curfew hours now stand at 10:00 pm to 4:00 am (22:00 to 04:00 hours)—and Nkwanta as the remaining areas under security watch. Peace efforts are already underway in both jurisdictions, with stakeholder engagements in Sampa and the establishment of a Peace Mediation Committee in Nkwanta.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak urged traditional authorities and community leaders to continuously collaborate with security forces to ensure lasting stability.
