The Ministry of Education and leadership of the teacher unions have reached an agreement to resolve ongoing disputes regarding the placement of teachers on appropriate salary scales, successfully averting a threatened nationwide strike action.
The resolution follows a meeting convened on Monday, 31 August 2026, by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to address the lingering concerns raised by the unions.
Following the discussions, the teacher unions agreed to call off their planned industrial action after receiving assurances and agreeing on concrete steps to rectify the pay structure anomalies.
Under the terms of the agreement, nearly 80,000 teachers are set to be placed on their correct salary scales. To streamline the process and alleviate administrative burdens, affected teachers will not be required to travel to their respective District Education Offices to submit payslips for validation.
Instead, the Ghana Education Service (GES) will compile and transmit the relevant data directly to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to facilitate the required salary adjustments and back-pay disbursements.
In a statement, the Ministry of Education commended the leadership of the teacher unions for their constructive approach and commitment to safeguarding the country’s education sector while prioritizing teacher welfare.
