Ghanaian gospel musician Joe Mettle has advocated for the grooming of a new generation of gospel musicians to enable them to make a greater and more positive impact within the body of Christ.
Instead of unfairly criticising emerging artists, Mettle believes veteran musicians should offer help and assistance to ensure they become more impactful.
He made these remarks in response to a question about whether he agreed with the assertion that the current crop of musicians isn’t producing spirit-filled music.
Joe Mettle argued that rather than making such pronouncements, it would be more beneficial to offer assistance to these musicians so they can improve.
“I don’t think it’s entirely true when people say new musicians aren’t producing spirit-filled music. Definitely, some might fall into that category, but there are still young people doing amazing music,” Mettle stated. “I think one of the things I am trusting God and praying about is that I, along with a group of Gospel musicians from my generation, am trying to draw more of the others closer, to pour into them what God has given us.”
He added, “Some of them are doing great and just need a bit of guidance. Rather than me going after them like that, let’s encourage them. Share your observations and suggestions with them. I can and do encourage some of them. Give them a bit of time, and they will do better.”
Speaking on the mid-morning show on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, Mettle emphasised that the journey is not easy, and new musicians need time to develop and improve significantly.
He did, however, admit that some new musicians are not receptive to feedback or suggestions.
“There are far more dynamics to this than what we see. Some also need leadership, mentorship, and guidance, which some don’t have,” Mettle explained.
“Part of the problem is that some of us have been very busy, but we need to start paying attention, including myself. We need to start paying attention to the people God has put around us, to the people God is raising around us, so that we can also be able to pour into them the same way we were poured into.”
