The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has responded to a viral social media video featuring a Ghanaian national appealing for urgent evacuation assistance from the country.

Following the circulation of the footage, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E. Benjamin Quashie, personally engaged with the individual, identified as Mr Sylvester Boakye, to address his situation.

According to a statement issued by the Mission, Mr Boakye admitted that his stranded situation at the airport resulted from a lack of coordination.

“During the engagement, Mr. Boakye acknowledged that he proceeded to the airport independently, without prior contact with the High Commission or adherence to the established coordination procedures,” the statement noted.

The High Commission has since assured Mr Boakye of its readiness to facilitate his safe return to Ghana once all necessary administrative processes are finalised.

The Mission also used the opportunity to debunk widespread rumours regarding a scheduled evacuation flight, clarifying that “contrary to reports in circulation, no chartered aircraft arrived for the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals due to outstanding procedural and technical arrangements.”

Despite the delay, officials emphasized that the repatriation exercise remains on track.

The Mission assured the Ghanaian community in South Africa that active efforts are underway to guarantee a “safe and orderly evacuation process” for all citizens who have voluntarily registered to return home.

Ghanaian citizens requiring further assistance or clarification regarding the ongoing repatriation process are urged to contact the High Commission directly via its designated communication channels.
