The Zongo Caucus Coordinator for the governing National Democratic Congress NDC in the Greater Accra Region, Hon. Ismaila Amed Horoya, says flooding has become something residents now “celebrate” whenever it rains — a situation he says should not be normalized.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Horoya blamed the persistent flooding on blocked waterways, accusing individuals of obstructing drains and water channels in the name of infrastructure development. He said these actions are directly causing floods across parts of Accra.
He questioned which authority is responsible for enforcing regulations to stop such acts so water can flow freely without causing destruction. The Zongo Caucus Coordinator called on the relevant authorities to sanction anyone found culpable.
He cited the Ramseyer site demolition as an example, noting that the area was originally designated as a waterway but encroachment by developers has led to flooding in parts of Tema whenever it rains.
Hon. Horoya also urged residents living in water-prone areas to prioritize their safety before it’s too late.
