June 11, 2026
BOAMAH

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Hon. Patrick Boamah, has called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to brief Parliament on the actual situation in South Africa amid conflicting reports and videos circulating about recent developments involving Ghanaians living in the country.

Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Patrick Boamah stressed the need for clarity and accurate information, noting that the growing uncertainty surrounding the situation in South Africa has made it necessary for Parliament and the Ghanaian public to be fully informed.

He highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and South Africa, emphasising that both countries have enjoyed mutually beneficial relations over the years.

According to him, several South African companies and institutions, including MTN, Stanbic Bank, and Gold Fields, have established significant operations in Ghana, contributing to the country’s economy and creating employment opportunities.

The Okaikwei Central legislator also pointed out that many Ghanaians live and work in South Africa, making it important for both governments to handle the matter carefully to safeguard the interests of their citizens.

Hon. Boamah cautioned against allowing recent events to undermine existing bilateral agreements and cooperation between the two nations.

He specifically referenced the 90-day visa waiver arrangement and urged that any concerns arising from the current situation be addressed through diplomatic channels and with tact.

He further reminded Parliament that the Ghanaians residing in South Africa come from communities across the country, including Takoradi, Abeka, Sekondi, Gbwe, Kumasi, Berekum, Akim Oda, and Adasawase.

He noted that these individuals remain constituents whose welfare must be protected.

The MP concluded by emphasising that preserving the strong relationship between Ghana and South Africa is in the best interest of both countries and their citizens, urging stakeholders to prioritise diplomacy, cooperation, and factual information in addressing the matter.
