Fire Service condemns public mockery of Firefighter nearly swept away by floodwaters

June 30, 2026
GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service has expressed shock at the level of hatred directed towards one of its officers, who was nearly swept away by floodwaters on Monday, June 29, 2026.

The Service stated that while its officers were on-site supporting rescue efforts, one of their team members was nearly carried off by the current.

However, instead of offering support and solidarity, onlookers at the scene actively laughed at the officer’s plight.

ADO II Alex Nartey, a member of the Public Relations Department, disclosed the incident and expressed deep disappointment.

He indicated that it was highly unfortunate that the very people being assisted showed absolutely no sympathy for the officer caught in the dangerous situation.

Furthermore, he underscored the need for the Ghanaian public to acknowledge the profound sacrifices these officers make, especially when operating under extreme logistical constraints.

Condemning the public’s reaction, Nartey stated, “One of our officers was nearly swept away by the floodwaters. But it was so disappointing that while this happened, those who were around laughed. Fire officers are also humans; they have families and so we cannot be treated in that manner. You were trapped and officers were there to help you, and while the officer was nearly swept away, you laughed instead of showing support. It was unfortunate.”

He added, “As humans, we are supposed to support each other. Animals are the ones that do not care for each other. But as humans, we have a responsibility to care for each other.”
