The Board Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Nana Ansah Sasraku III, has stated that SSNIT, the government, employers, workers, and Organised Labour share a collective responsibility to ensure Ghanaian workers retire with dignity, security, and confidence.
According to the traditional ruler, while SSNIT has served retirees for decades, the Trust must remain sustainable, strong, and relevant for future generations.
He stressed that celebrations should focus on long-term viability rather than past achievements.
He added that maintaining public confidence through accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement remains paramount, noting that these principles have driven SSNIT’s ongoing investments in modern technology.
“SSNIT has a responsibility, Organised Labour too has a responsibility, government has a responsibility, employers have a responsibility, workers themselves have a responsibility. But ultimately we share one objective that after the lifetime of work, every Ghanaian worker should look forward to retirement in dignity, security, and confidence. That is the promise at the heart of social security and a promise we must protect together,” he stated.
He further noted, “The SSNIT scheme has served this country for generations. Today, it continues to provide retirement income and other social security benefits to hundreds of thousands of pensioners and their families. But our responsibility is not merely what the scheme has achieved. Our responsibility is to ensure that the scheme will remain strong, relevant, and sustainable for generations yet unborn.”

Nana Ansah Sasraku III pointed out that the world of work is rapidly changing, with many individuals working remotely for foreign entities while others operate in the informal sector.
This dynamic, he stated, underscores the need for SSNIT to intensify its campaigns to enrol more informal sector workers into the scheme.
“There is another reality we must confront. Social Security is not sustained by institutions alone. It is sustained by trust. Workers must trust that their contributions are secured. Employers must understand and fulfil their obligations. Pensioners must have confidence that the scheme will be there for them and the public must see a scheme that is responsive, transparent, accountable and constantly improving,” he added.
While commending SSNIT for improving service delivery through technology, he maintained that digital tools alone are insufficient to build public confidence without ongoing dialogue, strong relationships, transparency, high performance, and strategic partnerships.
He highlighted Organised Labour as an indispensable partner in SSNIT’s success, noting that trade unions remain at the forefront of worker welfare and must continue collaborating to enhance the Trust’s operations.
Most importantly, he urged Organised Labour to actively assist in deepening public understanding of pensions and combating pension illiteracy across the country.
