President John Dramani Mahama has called for a fundamental paradigm shift in how African nations approach health delivery, urging leaders across the continent to view healthcare as an investable economic sector rather than a mere budgetary drain.
Addressing the Health Plenary at the Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt, President Mahama stated that shifting focus towards sustainable health investments is critical to unlocking long-term economic growth and building resilience across the continent.
He advocated increased capital allocation towards local pharmaceutical manufacturing, the establishment of robust regional value chains, and continuous health innovation.
According to the President, these strategic measures are essential to strengthening Africa’s health sovereignty, generating high-value job opportunities for young professionals, and drastically curtailing the continent’s over-reliance on imported essential medicines and vaccines.
Highlighting steps taken on the domestic front, President Mahama outlined Ghana’s ongoing Reset Agenda aimed at transforming national healthcare delivery.
Key pillars of the initiative, he noted, include the aggressive expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the operationalisation of Free Primary Health Care, the introduction of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, and deliberate government interventions to boost domestic manufacturing capacity for medical products.
President Mahama concluded with a direct call to action, charging governments, development financiers, regulatory bodies, and industrial actors to foster stronger cross-border partnerships.
He stressed that unified action remains the only viable path towards building resilient African health industries capable of securing both the health and economic future of the continent.
