Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister of Fisheries and Member of the Awutu Senya East seat in the Central Region, has denied ordering an assault on David Kobina, a Cape FM journalist.
The claimed event occurred on January 4, following a vetting process for parliamentary contenders at Cape Coast’s Central Regional Coordinating Council.
The members mistook the journalist for Jacob, who allegedly insulted an NPP official on a television station.
He was allegedly slapped many times, pummeled, and kicked repeatedly in the abdomen, ribs, chest, and belly by the irate supporters, who numbered more than eight.
Mr Kobbina told the media that he was charging his phone at the Central Regional Coordinating Council’s summer hut, where the vetting was taking place, when he was approached by a man dressed in mufti and thought to be a police officer.
The man identified him (the journalist) as Jacob, who had attacked a “honourable” on UTV, and showed him a photo from his phone.
But the journalist argued it was a mistake and handed the man his press badge to establish he was actually from Cape FM.
He was however allegedly slapped in the course of his conversation with the man.
Responding to the incident, the Minister described the allegations against her as baseless and intentionally fabricated by her opponents.
According to her, the story was fabricated to tarnish her reputation and gain political advantage.
“We categorically reject the claim that individuals associated with our team were responsible for this regrettable act. Mavis Hawa Koomson has consistently advocated for a peaceful and constructive political environment, and our team does not endorse or engage in any form of violence. We call on the Ghana Journalists Network and all stakeholders to allow the investigative process to unfold and refrain from premature judgments. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Kwabena, and we hope for his way to recovery.”
