Ishmael Arthur, one of Ghana’s top middle- and long-distance athletes, attributes his outstanding performance on the field to local foods.
Arthur, 27, an officer of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), stated that his performance is due to dedication, hard work, consistent training, and, most importantly, local foods.
He specifically mentioned ‘fufu’ and ‘konkonte’ as his favourite meals.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Rainbow Radio’s Sports Editor, Osei Owusu ‘Winter’, the athlete said he consumes either of the two meals once a week, and it has contributed immensely to his performance when running.
The athlete has won the 10,000-man final of the CAA Region Athletics Championship in Accra.
After the race, the sports editor caught up with the athlete in an interview where he expressed gratitude to God, his trainers, family, and Ghanaians for the support he has received.
Ishmael Arthur, who won the race after running twenty-five laps, said he has trained consistently every day and runs 170 kilometres almost every week.
“It is not easy, but what is crucial is to get support, and with that, you will excel as an athlete.”
He opined that Kenyan athletes perform far better than other athletes because they have a support system.
He said we have exceptional athletes in Ghana, but due to a lack of sponsorship and support, they have given up.
When asked his favourite food, he settled on ‘fufu’ and ‘konkonte’, stating that he consumes the food regularly.
“My favourite foods are ‘fufu’ and ‘konkonte’. I prefer them with palm-nut soup. I consume the food every weekend. My mom also knows it is my favourite, so she prepared it for him. The local food is healthy and helps our system. I have loved these local meals since my primary school days. The local foods are healthy and help our system and training.”
