A former Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Obiri Boahen, has criticised former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to reset the Ghanaian economy.
The private legal practitioner posited that the economy of Ghana is not a wrist watch that will require a reset.
Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated that the party’s 2024 manifesto launch on Saturday marks the first step to resetting the economy.
It also marks “the first step towards resetting our dear nation, Ghana,” he says in a brief promotional video released a day ahead of the manifesto launch at the University of Education, Winneba, Central Region.
The manifesto launch, themed Change to Reset Ghana, takes place at the University of Education, Winneba, in the Central Region.
Mr. Mahama promised to restore Ghana’s economy through a series of measures, including a national economic dialogue, tax rationalisation, and emergency measures to stabilise the Ghana cedi.
He also pledged to investigate the NPP’s “opaque gold-for-oil deal” and review the Gold Purchase Programme of the Bank of Ghana.
But reacting to this, Mr. Boahen stated that Ghanaians don’t have a short memory to forget the mess caused by former President John Dramani Mahama when he was president.
He asserted that a reset means the NDC under Mahama will cancel free SHS, the restoration of the nursing and teacher training allowance, and other initiatives introduced by the ruling government.
“How do you reset this economy? Is it a wrist watch that you will reset it on? We don’t need to reset the economy; we need an upgrade. If you try to rest the economy, or in trying to rest the economy, you will cancel the free senior high school policy. Resetting means the nursing and teacher trainee allowances will be cancelled. We cannot reset this economy, and Ghanaians should not allow themselves to be deceived by the lofty promises of the NDC.
We need an upgrade, not a reset. I am not saying the NPP is a saint and everything is perfect, but we have achieved a lot, and a Bawumia-led administration will upgrade the economy to a much better place.
He stressed that former President John Dramani Mahama has a terrible record of poor economic management, corruption, poor living conditions, and an unprecedented dumsor that lasted for years and collapsed businesses.
”Mahama is behaving as if, excuse me, we water in our brains and short memories. We saw his leadership and terrible record. We cannot vote for him again. He is not only incompetent but also lacks credibility and integrity. He cannot be trusted to deliver. He has been president before, and we saw his record. Bawumia, on the other hand, is a man of credibility. He is competent enough to continue and build on the legacies of President Akufo-Addo.”
