The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has restored calm in Ntotroso in the Ahafo region after an attempted security breach at the Newmont mining site on the night of Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
A statement issued by the police disclosed that a group of individuals allegedly attempted to steal gold from the site, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
According to the police, in the ensuing confrontation, three persons lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
The police added that the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked closely with the regional police team via phone, engaging community leaders and youth throughout the night and into the morning to ensure that the situation stabilised, with no reprisal attacks or escalation of tensions in the community.
It further revealed that a special investigation team from Accra has been deployed to Ntotroso to conduct a thorough inquiry.
The police also disclosed that a reinforcement team has been sent to the area to maintain peace, security, and law and order.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the three deceased individuals are Muslims, and in adherence to due process, their bodies are being prepared for release to their families for burial later today.
