Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin believes that if President John Dramani Mahama’s government is concerned about the Ghanaian people, it is unnecessary to remove the E-Levy and reinstate road tolls.
The caucus leader made the submission while debating the Vetting Committee’s report on the vetting procedure for the Ministers-designate for Roads and Highways, Food and Agriculture, and Education.
In his submission, he stated that if the E-Levy and betting tax are removed, the government should avoid reintroducing or introducing any new levy.
Commenting on the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza stated that the nominee told the whole country about the indebtedness in the road sector but failed to tell citizens many more roads had been constructed by former President Akufo-Addo.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that they expected the ruling government to find the funds to pay the numerous contractors who had completed government contracts in the road sector.
He said the caucus expected to have lessened the burden on Ghanaians when it comes to levies and taxes because they are committed to it, and yet, they have planned to impose another levy.
‘’So Mr. Speaker, when they remove the E-Levy, they are going to look for the money on road tolls. So the value is the same. They claim that they are going to repeal the E-Levy law and introduce road tolls and even charge more. You are not committed to relieving the burden of the Ghanaians you claim was on the ordinary Ghanaian. If you’re indeed committed to the ordinary Ghanaian, don’t introduce any road toll.”
