Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, one of the speakers who addressed the congregation during President Donald Trump’s inaugural church service, has urged him to be merciful towards minorities.
In her plea to the President, she stated that Americans have entrusted the country to him and expect that he will govern compassionately.
Her remarks follow comments made by Donald Trump regarding LGBTQI and immigration issues.
“Let me make one final plea, Mr President. Millions have put their trust in you.
“In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.
“There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in democratic, republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives.”
Although Mr. Trump has been given notice to crack down on immigrants, the Bishop reminded him that such individuals are contributing immensely to America’s economy.
She said “the people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings” and those “who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals”, Mr Trump turned away and looked over his shoulder, before examining the booklet he was holding.
“They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she said. Mr Trump then looked down at the floor.
Bishop Budde added: “I ask you to have mercy, Mr President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.
“And that you help those who are fleeing war and persecution in their own lands, to find compassion and welcome here.
“Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were all once strangers in this land.”
President Trump has issued an Executive Order declaring that his administration will recognize only two sexes, male and female, and ending “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity and inclusion programs inside federal agencies.
This means that the federal government use the term “sex” instead of “gender.
The State Department and the Department of Homeland Security have been directed to “require that government-issued identification documents, including passports, visas, and Global Entry cards, accurately reflect the holder’s sex.”
