Kantamanto market fire was an arson and not any electrical fault—Association

January 28, 2025
kaanta

An executive member of the Kantamanto Used Clothing Dealers Association, Aikens Mensah, has stated categorically that the fire that destroyed the market, affecting over 7,000 shops, was an act of arson.

He claims that anything aside from this narrative is false and that the fire was orchestrated by an arsonist or arsonists.

He revealed on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that prior to the outbreak, they received intelligence that the fire will be set ablaze.

Following this revelation, he stated that they informed the security services in November of last year, and personnel were deployed to provide security, but the market was set ablaze after the new year began.

“The fire that destroyed our stores was arson. We discovered that some people wanted to set the market on fire. In November, we learnt that someone intended to set fire to the market, so we notified the police, who provided security, but a person who intends to cause havoc will find any means to do so. The commander at the Railways Police station did an excellent job. He sent men to patrol the market, but when the new year arrived and those involved had the opportunity, they set the market on fire.

Anyone who dismisses the possibility of arson does not understand the situation. Those of us who work there understand that this was arson. Any claims that the fire was caused by electrical faults or other factors are lies. Someone or some people set the market ablaze. We are hopeful that the police will investigate and apprehend those who were involved.”

He went on to say, “The fire service are professionals, and they have made remarks about the fire, but those of us who trade in the market are aware that the market was set on fire.”
