A shooting at a sand winning site in Asiyaw has claimed the lives of five people.
The incident occurred during a meeting intended to halt illegal sand mining activities.
Farmers and residents in the area have consistently lamented the activities of the sand winners.
The farmers particularly have been protesting the destructive impact of illegal sand winning on their farmlands, which has severely affected crops like pawpaw, cassava, and maize.
Information reaching Nyankonton Mu on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM revealed that the boundary chief of the Adonteng division of the Akuapem Traditional area, along with his subjects, visited the site to intervene after hearing the concerns of the affected farmers.
However, upon their arrival, a group of armed men allegedly fired at them.
It remains unclear why the armed men fired at them, but some have accused a Tobge and another individual of issuing the order.
Five individuals have died as a result of the incident, leaving others injured.
Van Brown reported on the story, revealing that more than 17,000 hectares of land had been destroyed.
He confirmed that the farmers had been complaining about the issue for some time, and that the meeting today was intended to provide them with an opportunity to dialogue, resolve the issue, and potentially compensate the farmers.
”However, while the dialogue was going on, suspected land guards fired guns, killing five people. “A man who is said to be a national security coordinator and his brother, who owns the company, have been accused of ordering the shooting,” the reporter added.
He also stated that journalists who had accompanied the group to the meeting had been threatened and told never to return to the area again.
