Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has underscored the need for the decongestion exercise currently being carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to be sustained.
She said unlike in the past when such activities turned into a nine-day wonder, this one ought to be sustained to clean Accra and make it a model capital for the sub-region.
According to her, the politicisation of the decongestion exercise over years and under successive governments has undermined its effectiveness.
To help sustain the exercise, she has asked the powers that be to keep their hands off and allow the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) to continue doing his job.
Madam Daniels, speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, said the level of indiscipline on our roads was alarming and a threat to pedestrians and drivers.
‘’The NPP and NDC should allow those appointed to work. From the Adabraka traffic light through the Central Business District, people have taken over the streets and are selling without recourse to the dangers associated with the lawlessness. We have politicised everything, including marriage, and allowed lawlessness and indiscipline to thrive. We have to speak the truth and plead with the politicians, particularly the NPP, not to undermine this exercise.
The ongoing exercise by the AMA and the other collaborators must be commended but, most importantly, sustained,’’ she stressed.
She also appealed to authorities to find a designated place or use the old onion market for a new market so all those selling on the streets would be sent there.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, officially commenced a long-anticipated decongestion exercise across major parts of the Central Business District (CBD) to clear unauthorised trading activities from pavements and on the streets.
The operation, which began at 4:00 a.m. and was supervised by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, targeted Kinbu Street and extended through Makola, CMB, Circle, and Kaneshie.
