Superintendent of Assemblies of God Eastern Region B, Rev. Obed Asiedu, has called for intensified efforts in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
He lamented that illegal mining has severely degraded water bodies, making previously drinkable ones unusable even for animals or ironing.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he asserted that authorities have to deal ruthlessly with those involved.
“Galamsey has destroyed our water bodies and sources of water. Gone were the days when we could drink directly from water bodies, including the ones at Enyinam. When travelling from Accra to Kwahu, you would see people sourcing water from the water body there. But today, the water has been destroyed. It is no longer safe to even give it to animals. You cannot also use it to iron your clothes.
All these illegal activities are happening because we want quick money. It is good to make money, but do so genuinely. You cannot destroy our ecosystems and environment all because you want to make quick money at the expense of others. What’s happening is a threat to our survival. We will soon start importing water to drink if the situation is not resolved,” he warned.
He appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to remain firm and deal with the canker.
“The law enforcement agencies should deal with the matter. President John Dramani Mahama must intensify the fight against galamsey. Those who are engaged in galamsey should also be dealt with. There are also those who have been licensed who are engaged in galamsey who must be punished for their unlawful activities,” he added.
