An individual has been confirmed dead following a fatal accident involving an Ayalolo bus in front of the Ghana Cocoa Board Head Office Headquarters in Accra.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, but reports suggest the bus, with registration number GT 5493-17, experienced a brake failure before ramming into traders and other vehicles.
The bus was reportedly preparing to pick up passengers when the incident occurred.
The victim, who was not a trader, had just finished shopping and was on their way home.
Police officers and officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), led by Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) Michael Kpakpo Allotey, were at the scene.
In a direct address to the traders, the MCE issued a stern warning, urging them to vacate the streets and move to the designated market space.
MCE Alloytey described the accident as an unfortunate event that could have been far worse.
To encourage the relocation, he announced that traders who move to the new market will be given one year of rent-free space.
However, they will still be required to pay a daily market toll of Ghc2.
”Nobody should come and sell on the streets and pavements from tomorrow. There are spaces in the market. Go there and sell. We would allocate spaces to each one of you for free for a year, but you would have to pay a daily market toll of Ghc2. The accident could have been worse, and because we don’t want it repeated, we don’t want any trader on the streets from tomorrow,” he stated.
The deceased’s body has been moved to the morgue, and the bus along with other damaged vehicles have been towed by the police as they commence an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
