The Movement for Change, a political movement spearheaded by former Trades and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen, has officially transitioned into a political party named the United Party (UP).
The party was formally launched on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra.
Founder Alan Kyerematen, along with party officials and distinguished guests, attended the event. In his keynote address, the founder explained that transitioning the Movement into a fully-fledged political party was essential to operationalise its vision for comprehensive national reform.
He described the United Party as a party dedicated to building a united, peaceful, secure, and prosperous Ghana that provides equal opportunities for all Ghanaians to realise their full potential.
The UP has adopted the monarch butterfly as its official symbol, and yellow has been designated as the party colour.
Alan Kyerematen expressed gratitude for the participation of Ghanaians in the launch, declaring it a “new dawn” for the nation’s political landscape. He stated that the party’s goal is to end acrimony, divisiveness, and the existing duopoly in Ghanaian politics, moving decisively to eliminate the winner-takes-all system.
This shift, he emphasized, is intended to usher in a new age of conducting business, creating opportunities for all citizens irrespective of age or religion, promoting accountable governance, and prioritizing environmental protection.
He characterized the party as a broad-based, centrist movement committed to accelerating comprehensive economic and social growth. Mr. Kyerematen articulated a desire to introduce a new culture of politics, fundamentally moving away from the current climate of indecent discourse.
He offered a strong critique of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that since their establishment, both parties have lacked and failed to outline a coherent, measurable vision for Ghana’s progress.
Mr. Kyerematen outlined the party’s bold Vision to transform Ghana into the Economic Powerhouse of Africa by 2040. He asserted that if elected in 2028, they will guarantee a nation that is a “paradise,” driven by the core Mission of establishing a secured, united, and prosperous nation. He promised equal opportunities for all Ghanaians, contrasting this with a current system he views as designed for only a select few.
A primary commitment of the party is the empowerment of youth and women through targeted opportunities and life-transforming initiatives.
The party’s foundational Values are centered on several core principles:
- Promoting integrity and ethical leadership at all levels of national and party establishments.
- Introducing a culture of discipline, law, and order in all aspects of national life.
- Championing meritocracy and excellence.
- Ensuring tolerance for diversity of opinions and the introduction of decent language in politics and the media.
- Instilling patriotism and national interest.
- Protecting free speech and freedom of association.
- Reviving the entrepreneurial spirit of Ghanaians.
- Steadfastly resisting oppression and autocracy.
Anchored on the Great Transformational Plan
The United Party’s political agenda is firmly anchored on the “Great Transformational Plan” (GTP). This plan advocates for a new style of leadership focused on three core pillars: comprehensive economic transformation, fostering deep national unity, and stimulating robust private-sector growth.
Following its launch, the UP aims to decisively dismantle the entrenched political duopoly of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to usher in a new era of truly inclusive governance.
The party is further committed to fighting corruption through rigorous institutional and legal reforms, leadership by example, and the strategic deployment of technological innovation in public service delivery. The UP seeks to create a functional society that prioritises discipline and efficiency, celebrating competence, excellence, and meritocracy over mediocrity.
The choice of the Monarch Butterfly (known as “afranfranto” in Akan) as the party’s symbol signifies change, hope, strength, and spirituality, inspiring the electorate toward a brighter future for Ghana.

Message by Interim Chairman
Interim Chairman of the Party, Boniface Abubakar Saddiq, delivered the welcome address, announcing that the party received its provisional certificate on October 3, 2025.
Chairman Saddiq stated that the United Party intends to breathe a new era of change into the Ghanaian political system, promising a transformative approach to governance and leadership based on competence.
He outlined the historical context of the original United Party, which was founded upon a broad coalition of seven different political forces. He contrasted this heritage with the current New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that it now only boasts of the Danquah, Dombo, and Busia traditions.
The Chairman took a decisive stand against the NPP regarding its recent claim of granting amnesty to certain members who had been previously expelled.
He emphasised the party’s cross-partisan composition, noting that the new United Party comprises members drawn from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and other political groups. This diverse coalition, he declared, is poised to become the definitive alternative force that Ghana requires.
Chairman Saddiq concluded by stressing the UP’s core values: unwavering unity and competence, and a commitment to being devoid of ethnicity, tribalism, religious division, and autocracy.

Party for all
Yaw Buaben Asamoah, the party’s Interim General Secretary, stated that the launch of the new political entity is essential to fill an urgent gap in the nation’s leadership. He emphasised that this void is specifically for leadership defined by integrity and must be addressed immediately.
Mr Asamoah outlined that the party’s core mission is to drive a vision of “Ghana First”, focusing on economic transformation, enhancing democracy, and unifying the nation. He stressed the importance of elevating Ghana’s international standing and promoting inclusive national investment. He also committed to forming a Government of National Unity if elected.
The Interim General Secretary asserted that the party is committed to transforming the national mindset and restoring self-belief among Ghanaians.
He delivered a pointed critique against the existing NDC and NPP duopoly, arguing that the two major parties show no respect for citizens, believe power is their exclusive right, and are guilty of recycling old policies, promoting corruption, and failing to deliver tangible reforms for genuine societal transformation. He positioned the party as a viable third choice designed to meet the needs of the “silent majority” and provide relief to the populace.
Mr Asamoah concluded by announcing that membership is open to all, with immediate plans to organise internal elections for leaders at all levels. He also detailed the party’s economic plan to develop a unique “enterprise economy” module to empower members to generate income through profit-making and entrepreneurial initiatives.
