The Ghana National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has announced plans to intensify its campaign against road accidents following a concerning rise in incidents after the festive season.
Mrs. Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Authority, attributed the recent spike in accidents to driver recklessness.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, she noted that while accidents were recorded during the holidays, the numbers remained relatively low. However, data suggests a worrying upward trend in recent weeks.
According to Mrs. Sateckla, the NRSA previously collaborated with the Ghana Police Service and other state agencies to conduct intensive exercises along highways and at transport terminals.
“We worked with the police on our roads and highways, ensuring that drivers maintained discipline,” she explained. “That contributed largely to the minimal accidents we saw during the festive season. However, we have observed that drivers have become reckless again. We must now intensify our campaign to ensure discipline is restored.”
While the Authority is still tabulating official statistics to determine specific causes for recent crashes,
Mrs. Sateckla identified several recurring factors contributing to road carnage. She cited speeding as the primary cause of road fatalities, alongside general driver recklessness which includes dangerous behaviors like wrongful overtaking.
She also highlighted the danger of fatigue, specifically “sleep driving” or operating a vehicle while tired.
To combat the trend, the NRSA will hold stakeholder meetings to develop new strategies aimed at reducing road carnage and improving driver behavior across the country.
