Lambert Appiah Rockson, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma South constituency, has advised Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to select a running mate for the 2028 general elections who is credible, mature, and highly respected by technocrats.
He argued that the dynamics of the 2028 elections will differ significantly from those of 2024.
He believes the NPP flagbearer requires a partner who can effectively complement him to secure victory for the party.
During an appearance on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Rockson identified the former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, as the ideal candidate for the role. In his view, the educationist possesses the necessary credibility, maturity, and professional respect required for the position.
Rockson, who is seeking to be elected as a parliamentary candidate for the 2028 cycle, maintained that Dr Adutwum’s solid political record sets him apart from other contenders and would be instrumental in ensuring an NPP win.
When the host suggested that his proposal might undermine the arguments of those who supported Dr Bawumia on the basis that he was already well-marketed—and that maintaining Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh was the best way to keep a winning team—Rockson disagreed, reiterating that political circumstances have shifted.
“Those who know the dynamics will agree with me that we need someone who is more credible, mature and respected by the technocrats as a running mate for the 2028 general elections. In 2024, Dr Bawumia settled on Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate, but the dynamics have changed. In politics, we look at popularity contests. In every election, we have the kind of leader we demand. Do we see 2028 as the same as 2024? To me, 2028 requires a running mate that is more mature, a running mate that the technocrats have full respect for, a running mate who is committed to the grassroots, and a running mate who has the personality.”
When pushed to clarify whether his assertions implied that Dr Opoku-Prempeh lacked these attributes, he responded: “You cannot push me to the wall. That is why I stated that I don’t want to be misquoted or taken out of context. Everyone has a level of respect accorded to them. To me, Dr Adutwum is more respected, credible, and mature, and if we settle on him as our running mate, we will win the elections hands down.”
