Speaker directs MPs to comply with ban on unauthorised Sirens, escorts

July 21, 2026
Bagbin-1

The Speaker of Parliament has instructed Lawmakers to strictly observe a Ministry of the Interior directive prohibiting the unauthorized use of sirens and police escorts.

Addressing the House, the Speaker emphasized that the directive ensures state security assets—including police escort details and sirens—are utilized “at all times in accordance with the constitution, the laws of Ghana and all lawful administrative requirements.”

Under the Interior Ministry’s guidelines, no individual may fit or operate a siren on any private or official vehicle without prior written consent from the Minister for the Interior.

Additionally, police escort services and related resources can only be deployed with explicit written permission from the Interior Minister or the Inspector General of Police acting on the Minister’s behalf.

The Ghana Police Service has been mandated to enforce these measures by confiscating unauthorized sirens, halting unapproved escort operations, and prosecuting offenders where necessary.

The Speaker advised Members seeking clarity on these guidelines to “seek the appropriate guidance through the established institutional channels for compliance in accordance with law.”

He affirmed that his outfit will maintain constructive engagement with the Executive, police leadership, and state institutions regarding security protocols, parliamentary privileges, and legislative independence.

This collaboration will proceed “always with a view to strengthening our democratic institutions and advancing the public interest,” he noted.

The policy aims to enhance public accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.
