In a major move to address public transportation challenges across the country, the government has set aside GH¢400 million to acquire high-occupancy buses aimed at expanding the operations of state-owned transport firms.
The Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the financial shift whilst presenting the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
He revealed that the targeted injection of funds will primarily benefit the Metro Mass Transit Limited and the Intercity State Transport Corporation (STC).
“Government is reallocating four hundred million Ghana cities for their position of high occupancy buses to strengthen the fleet of state owned transport companies including Metromass Transit and the state transport company,” he stated.
Dr Forson explained that the new fleet will significantly boost overall passenger capacity, particularly along heavily congested urban corridors and busy intercity highways.
Addressing lawmakers, the Minister highlighted the practical benefits for everyday commuters across the nation.
“Mr speaker this intervention will expand public transport capacity particularly along high demand urban and intercity routes reducing long passenger queues during peak hours and provide commuters with more reliable and efficient alternative to private vehicles,” he told the House.
