The Government of Ghana has unveiled a financial assistance package valued at GH¢5,500 for every Ghanaian repatriated from South Africa in the wake of the latest xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals.

The intervention was made known by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whilst addressing the press on Monday, July 27, 2026.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the monetary relief constitutes a key component of a comprehensive

“Welcome Home Financial Package” established to assist the returnees in rebuilding their lives locally.
He elaborated that the funds are targeted at enabling the returnees to acquire basic domestic supplies, handle travel expenses, and address pressing personal needs during their resettlement phase back home.

“You are not coming home as refugees or destitute individuals; you are coming back as royals of this nation. This GH¢5,500 support ensures that no returnee starts their resettlement journey empty-handed.”

The Minister made these observations in the company of several high-ranking state dignitaries as they received a fresh group of 150 returnees.

The Foreign Ministry indicated that the cash grant forms part of an overarching integration framework comprising job opportunities, enterprise development support, and mental health assistance.

Through a dedicated employment placement scheme, state authorities have successfully lined up approximately 200 jobs for the evacuees by collaborating with commercial entities across the private sector.

Mr Ablakwa added that every returnee is being registered into a central database designed to link them with venture seed funding, skilled trade centres, and business development resources.

To address mental health concerns, the government is offering complimentary trauma therapy and psychological care to arriving citizens to aid their recovery from the shock of violent displacement.

Addressing safety concerns, the Minister clarified that all repatriated citizens were thoroughly vetted by security agencies in South Africa prior to boarding, flatly rejecting online speculation that some were fleeing law enforcement.

Ministry records confirm that no individual among the group features on global wanted registries.
Mr Ablakwa reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to demand redress for nationals who incurred damages throughout the crisis.

He revealed that state legal teams are assembling detailed dockets to seek financial restitution through international diplomatic and legal avenues for citizens whose enterprises, inventory, and property were ruined amidst the anti-foreigner unrest in South Africa.
