Government Repatriates Over 3,200 Migrant Beggars in Ongoing Security Crackdown

August 24, 2026
MUNTAKA MUBARAK

The Minister for the Interior, Hon Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has disclosed that a total of 3,241 migrant beggars have been repatriated from Ghana to their respective home countries as part of an ongoing national exercise to address illegal immigration and street begging.

Taking his turn at the Government Accountability Series, the Interior Minister presented a detailed account of the ministry’s operations, highlighting significant progress made in restoring order to major urban centers across the country.

According to the Minister, the government successfully repatriated 2,281 migrant beggars to neighbouring countries by the end of 2025.

He further stated that the momentum was sustained into the following year, with an additional 960 migrant beggars repatriated by July 2026.

Hon Mohammed-Mubarak emphasized that the government remains resolute in its commitment to addressing the proliferation of unauthorized non-nationals on the nation’s streets.

He explained that the continuous influx of foreign nationals engaging in street begging presents both socio-economic challenges and security concerns that require firm, consistent, and lawful intervention.

The Minister assured the public that the exercise is being conducted in strict compliance with international human rights standards and national legal frameworks.

He noted that the Ministry of the Interior, through the Ghana Immigration Service and relevant law enforcement agencies, is actively working to identify and safely process all individuals operating without legal status.

Work is currently ongoing to ensure the total repatriation of all such illegal immigrants through lawful and humane means, with the government reinforcing intelligence gathering and border security mechanisms to prevent re-entry into the country.
