Street beggars who were recently rounded up by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in areas including Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie, and Abossey Okai have returned to their usual spots.
Most of the beggars are foreign nationals.
In May of this year, the Ghana Immigration Service conducted an operation that rounded up a total of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in street begging.
The exercise began in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, and focused on Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, and Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
During the operation, several women and children, suspected to be foreign nationals, were apprehended and transported to an assembly point.
The group consisted of 909 adults and 1,332 children. Following confirmation of their identities, the Ghana Immigration Service repatriated them.
Despite these efforts, the beggars have returned to the same locations.
A recent and consistent visit by Rainbowradioonline.com over a two-month period revealed that the number of beggars is increasing weekly.
The children accompanying the adult beggars were observed selling cotton buds and other items to passers-by, while others were seen soliciting alms.
