Ghana and Russia have signed a historic Visa Waiver Agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic history.
The agreement, signed on the first day of an official three-day visit to Russia by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, represents the first visa waiver framework between both countries since they established formal diplomatic relations in 1958.
The visit follows an official invitation extended to the Ghanaian Foreign Minister by his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, to map out broader areas of strategic bilateral cooperation.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Mr Ablakwa revealed that both nations would continue negotiations to extend enhanced travel privileges to all categories of travellers in a bid to bolster trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.
During high-level bilateral talks, the Foreign Minister expressed Ghana’s appreciation to Russia for its support and affirmative vote regarding the Ghana-led UN resolution that declared the transatlantic slave trade and racialised chattel slavery as the gravest crime against humanity.
The official visit is expected to lay the groundwork for expanded strategic, economic, and diplomatic partnerships between Accra and Moscow.
