The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has announced that it will embark on the nationwide strike action against illegal mining on Thursday, October 10, 2024, despite Organised Labour’s decision to suspend the strike.

Organised Labour had planned to embark on a nationwide strike in protest against illegal mining activities.

They had asked the government to declare a state of emergency, place a ban on all forms of small scale mining activities, and also revoke the law that allows mining in our forest reserves.

However, after a meeting with the government on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, Organised Labour called off the strike.

UTAG expressed disappointment in Labour for calling off the strike.

In a referendum on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, UTAG members supported the motion to strike, with 77.95% (2,153 votes) in favour, 21.98% (607 votes) against, and 0.07% (2 votes) abstaining.

The National Executive Council of UTAG has unanimously declared an immediate and indefinite strike across all 15 UTAG branches, effective today, October 10, 2024.

“Following the referendum, the NEC convened an emergency meeting, invoking Article XIX, Clause 5 of the UTAG Constitution. In line with this constitutional mandate, NEC has unanimously declared an immediate INDEFINITE STRIKE from the 10th of October 2024 across all 15 UTAG branches. All members are directed to comply with this decision until the government formally announces a nationwide ban on mining and prospecting activities in protected areas, including forest reserves, farmlands, and water.”
