Any attempt by the government to deploy the military to Parliament on Tuesday will be resisted—NDC MP

October 21, 2024
Governs-Kwame-Agbodza (2)

Kwame Governs Agbodza, Chief Whip of the National Democratic Congress in Parliament, has issued a warning regarding the government’s purported plans to station military personnel at Parliament on October 22, 2024.

At an NDC press conference on October 20, 2024, Agbodza alleged that government elements had met to discuss deploying troops, mirroring the January 7, 2021 incident.

He underscored the sovereignty of Ghanaians and the security forces’ constitutional obligations.

He cautioned that any military or police misconduct would provoke a forceful response from citizens, considering the government’s limited tenure.

He admonished the public to protect parliamentary proceedings and stand by the Speaker and NDC majority.

“We are aware that between yesterday and today, government, some elements of government, have had a meeting again to deploy the military to the precincts of parliament to enter the tent. We are aware of that,” he said..

“We can guarantee them the people of this country are sovereign. If you wear a military uniform or police uniform, you work for the Constitution. But they should be aware that the life of this government is less than two months.

“They will have to account for their conduct in 2020 and whatever they do tomorrow. But they shouldn’t be surprised.

The people of this country would react forcefully to any misconduct of anybody in uniform on Tuesday and beyond,” he said.
