Holding elections in Bawku would be extremely dangerous if the crisis is not solved – Analyst

October 30, 2024
Saani-Adib

Adib Saani, a security analyst, has suggested that if the current crisis in Bawku is not resolved before the elections, holding them there would be dangerous.

Mr. Saani stated that it would be unfair to endanger the lives of EC officials and other stakeholders in the area on December 7, 2024.10.30

He described the situation as unfortunate, claiming that the approach taken over the years to resolve the long-standing crisis has yielded no positive results.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he asserted that resolving the ongoing Bawku crisis will require a multifaceted approach.

One of the key issues he suggested should be addressed was the proliferation of firearms in the area.

He stated that the sophisticated weapons used by the parties involved in the crisis can sometimes overwhelm the soldiers stationed in Bawku.

He emphasised the importance of authorities strengthening border control in order to prevent illegal arms from crossing our borders.

”We must put a stop to it because if we do not address the issue, the Bawku election may be impossible. Until the security situation improves, you cannot put polling agents’ and other officials’ lives in danger. Aside from politics, the proliferation of arms in the area is a challenge, and it sometimes surprises soldiers how residents can obtain guns and use them in the conflict.”.

He also opined that the politicisation of the Bawku crisis has escalated it, stressing the need for politicians to avoid doing that to ensure we deal with the crisis once and for all.

”One of the factors complicating the Bawku crisis is the issue’s increasing politicisation. The politics surrounding the crisis are overwhelming. I believe that politics is complicating the issues and that we must proceed with caution. Beyond that, the Bawku crisis is a multifaceted problem that necessitates a multifaceted solution. So, if you think that deploying security personnel and imposing curfews is the only way to solve the problem, you’re mistaken. “There is a need for us to approach this crisis with a multidimensional solution to ensure that it is resolved once and for all,” he added.
