The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has asked the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to restore discipline in senior high schools across the country.
The directive comes after incidents recorded in some secondary schools, including the one recorded at the Adventist Senior High School Kumasi, where a female student was shot by a male student during an argument.
The minister expressed worry about the situation, describing it as a breakdown in discipline within the country’s educational institutions.
Speaking to school heads during a meeting in Sunyani in the Bono Region, the minister mentioned the shooting incident and noted that it was one of the examples of the indiscipline in our schools.
He noted that the shooting incident “leaves much to be desired” and called for urgent reforms.
According to him, the GES Director-General, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has the full backing of the government to implement reforms that will restore discipline in our schools.
“He has our full policy support to enforce those directives. So, the ‘unGhanaian’ development of shooting in Kumasi, the Director General of the GES has the full support of the government for you to strengthen your inspection so that guns, knives, and other violent tools are not found in our schools,” he stated.
