The Western Regional Health Directorate has reactivated a public health emergency in response to the monkeypox outbreak in the region.
Available data shows that the region accounts for 71 per cent of the total national cases, raising concerns over an emergency health situation.
Chief Pharmacist for the Western Regional Health Directorate, Kwadwo Okyere Ampenteng, disclosed that the region currently has 187 suspected cases, with 43 confirmed cases.
He said out of the 14 districts, 9 have recorded cases of Mpox.
The districts with cases are Tarkwa Nsuaem, which has the highest number of recorded cases, followed by EKMA, STMA, Wassa Amenfi East, Ellembelle, Prestea Huni Valley, Jomoro, Wassa Amenfi Central, and Wassa Amenfi West.
The districts without confirmed cases, he stated, are Ahanta West, Mpohor, Nzema East, and Shama. Wassa East is not mentioned, but Wassa was mentioned without clarification.
However, they have all picked up suspected cases without any confirmed cases.
Kwadwo Okyere Ampenteng made the disclosure at Essipong during the Western Regional Retreat.
He revealed further that the regional health directorate has rolled out its emergency response to deal with the spread.
“So we need to ensure that we take the necessary steps to avoid the spread,” he emphasised.
He said the viral disease is here with us and is spreading fast, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts in dealing with the situation.
“But as a directorate, these are the things we are doing; we have reactivated the emergency response team,” as part of measures aimed at dealing with the crisis.
