The True Drivers Union has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to immediately call his officers to order and put a stop to their extortion of drivers.
Yaw Berimah, Public Relations Officer for the Union, stated on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the situation has become unbearable. He warned that if the IGP doesn’t intervene, the Union “will advise themselves”, implying they will take further action.
He emphasised that police officers are intimidating drivers and extorting money from them, a practice he described as unethical.
“We are appealing to the IGP to speak to his officers or call them to order with immediate effect. They are extorting money from drivers, which is clearly a nuisance. We are already burdened by increased electricity tariffs and the newly implemented GH¢1 levy per litre on fuel. We are struggling with all these challenges, and yet, the police are intimidating us on the road and extorting from us.”
He passionately questioned, “Have drivers signed a work-and-pay agreement with Ghana for us to be extorted by the police? ‘Ghanafuo monsoreo namu nti na police fuo nu etutu yebotomu,’ ”he stated, adding that they will no longer tolerate this unethical behaviour from the police.
