Grimsby Town Football Club has been fined £20,000 by the EFL Board for fielding an ineligible player, Clarke Oduor, in a Carabao Cup match against Manchester United on August 27, 2025.
Of the total fine, £10,000 has been suspended until the end of the 2025/26 season.
The EFL Board determined that the breach occurred due to the club’s submission of Oduor’s registration at 12:01 pm, one minute past the 12:00 pm deadline on the day preceding the match.
Despite achieving a 12-11 victory in a dramatic penalty shootout at Blundell Park, the club promptly self-reported the administrative error the following day.
The EFL Board acknowledged that Grimsby Town’s non-compliance was unintentional and noted that the club had no intention to deceive or mislead.
The Board’s decision to impose a fine was consistent with precedents established in previous League Cup offenses.
Furthermore, Grimsby Town has implemented new measures to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.
The club will be required to pay the suspended £10,000 fine if it fields another ineligible player in any League Competition prior to the end of the 2025/26 season.
