The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has warned residents of Mpatuam and nearby mining communities against arming themselves during confrontations with soldiers.
The caution follows recent clashes at the Asanko Gold Ghana Limited concession, which left two people dead, including an Assemblyman.
GAF had deployed troops to the concession in July 2025 to curb illegal mining and protect property.
On Monday, September 8, troops on patrol encountered illegal miners who fled, claiming one had fallen into a pit and drowned.
The next day, miners returned in protest, leaving the body near a military base.
After reclaiming the body before police arrived, a large crowd from surrounding communities joined the protest.
They attacked the concession, burning 14 pieces of heavy-duty mining equipment such as excavators and tipper trucks.
During the incident, Mr. Samuel Danquah, the Assemblyman for Manso Aboabo, was injured and later died.
The Armed Forces extended extended condolences to the affected families and the community.
However, it also warned residents not to confront their officers.
In its statement GAF said “The situation was brought under control after reinforcements and firing of warning shots”.
“The military wishes to caution the people of Mpatuam and all others in mining communities to desist from arming themselves to confront the Ghana Armed Forces.”
“We urge all citizens to cooperate with the Armed Forces and refrain from acts that endanger lives or undermine national security.”
