Mrs Rosemary Amerley Sackey, the former General Manager for Benefits at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has asserted that the institution has consistently served as a stalwart pillar in Ghana’s economic development.
She highlighted that the Trust remains one of the largest investors in the country, effectively channelling its surplus funds into critical sectors such as energy, housing, health, and education, among others.
Mrs Sackey delivered these remarks at the 2025 SSNITposium, held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. She affirmed that SSNIT has remained resilient, continuing its service to the public through its dedicated and hard-working staff.
She further indicated that SSNIT’s overall objective underscores its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality) by extending social protection to all.
Mrs Sackey commended SSNIT for the introduction of the Self-Employed Enrolment Driven (SEED) Initiative, designed to encourage self-employed individuals across Ghana to join the formal pension scheme.
This initiative, she noted, provides a viable pathway for the self-employed to contribute and subsequently receive essential benefits, including old-age pension, invalidity pension, and survivor lump-sum benefits for their dependents.
She also stressed the importance of compliance, pointing out that enforcing it can be costly.
Therefore, she advised that SSNIT must collaborate closely with its stakeholders to achieve this objective.
She urged SSNIT to diligently protect the contributions and retirement income of its members, emphasising that the Trust’s work is instrumental in driving sustainable national growth.
Mrs Sackey stated that sustainability is deeply rooted in trust, which is achieved through responsiveness and consistent service delivered with the professionalism, empathy, and pride of the staff.
She expressed her belief that technology will enhance the work of the Trust, ensuring that SSNIT continues to thrive through greater transparency and accountability.
A Look to the Future
In looking to the future, she charged SSNIT to critically examine the rapidly changing world of work—one characterised by digital transformation, informal entrepreneurship, and shifting demographics.
Mrs Sackey delivered a powerful call to action:
“SSNIT must continue to innovate, extend coverage to self-employed workers and nurture a culture of voluntary compliance built on trust, relevance and value… As we celebrate six decades of professional protection through national impact, let us pause and reflect on the deeper question, ‘How can a social security system like ours evolve to guarantee not only income in retirement but also stimulate productivity, intergenerational solidarity, and economic renewal in today’s world of work?'”
She stated that this fundamental question should define the next phase of SSNIT—a call to rethink, to reimagine, and to reaffirm the purpose of SSNIT as both a safety net and a catalyst for national development.
She declared that the next 60 years of SSNIT must be marked by deeper inclusion, stronger partnerships, and even greater trust, to the extent that the next generation of leaders will guard this legacy with integrity and innovation and remember that behind every contribution lies a life, a family, and a future.
Mrs Rosemary Amerley Sackey maintained that SSNIT has never defaulted in the payment of pensions, affirming that they have paid consistently, the right amount, and promptly.
She concluded that for 60 years, SSNIT has kept its promise, protected livelihoods, supported workers and pensioners, and built one of Ghana’s most enduring institutions.
Having served at the Trust, she personally witnessed the resilience, reform, and steady transformation of SSNIT.
