Forty-seven health professionals have left Ghana for Saint Kitts and Nevis, forming the second cohort deployed under the government’s Health Workforce Migration Initiative.
This bilateral arrangement exports skilled healthcare labour to provide workers with international experience.
Speaking before their departure, Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, charged the team to remain disciplined and committed, urging them to “work diligently, make Ghana proud, and return home with valuable experience to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
She noted over “70,000 nurses alone are yet to be employed”, with additional numbers from 2021–2025 cohorts still at home. Whilst the government has started recruiting about “25,000 from the 2021 group” this year, it is also pursuing innovative solutions to address the backlog.
The Health Workforce Migration Initiative aims to create overseas opportunities for Ghanaian health professionals, ensuring the nation benefits from the skills, training, and remittances they return with.
