The Jatikay Centre for Human Security and Peace Building has described the conviction and 20-year prison sentence handed to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, over illegal mining activities at Samreboi as positive news.
The Centre described the judgment as an important step towards strengthening accountability in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Executive Director of the Jatikay Centre, Adib Saani, noted that his outfit had over the years consistently advocated for strict punishment against individuals involved in illegal mining.
He was, however, quick to add that a single conviction would not be enough to bring the menace to an end.
He posited that there was the need for genuine commitment in the fight and the prosecution of all persons involved in illegal mining, regardless of their political connections, social standing, or influence.
“Today’s judgment represents an important step towards demonstrating that the rule of law can prevail over impunity,” the Jatikay Centre stated.
He asserted that the conviction sends a strong message that accountability must remain central to efforts aimed at protecting Ghana’s forests, rivers, and natural resources.
He expressed optimism that the outcome of the case will send a strong signal that accountability is indispensable if Ghana is to protect its forests, rivers, and other natural resources.
He also commended the judiciary for its role in upholding the rule of law and urged state institutions involved in the fight against illegal mining to maintain the momentum.
He maintained that all individuals involved in illegal mining must be held accountable, arguing that only a fair, consistent, and non-partisan approach could rebuild public confidence and deliver lasting results.
Adib Saani, who is also a security analyst, said one of the strongest ways to deal with the galamsey menace is to enforce the laws, emphasizing that whoever is involved must be brought to book. He noted that under the previous government, it was obvious that there was no commitment towards the fight against galamsey.
“We have toured several galamsey sites and seen the damage caused. We have also seen the effects on human lives, with babies born in galamsey areas suffering from deformities. Our water bodies have been destroyed, same as our forest reserves, and galamsey remains a threat to national security. Those involved in galamsey are nation wreckers committing treason, and they must not be pardoned.”
He stated that the conviction and sentencing of Chairman Wontumi should not end there, calling for all others involved—whether NDC or NPP—to be prosecuted and sentenced if found guilty.
“The conviction of Wontumi should not end there. There are more than 1,000 more illegal miners wreaking havoc on us. We have to ensure that we bring them to book. We pray this will not end with Wontumi. It does not matter if those involved are NDC or NPP; they should be held to account for their criminality,” he added.
