A devastating fire has destroyed nine out of 17 rooms at the Tamale family residence of the late MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The inferno occurred on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, just a day before the first anniversary of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed his life alongside seven others.

Confirming the incident, the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), ADO I Hudu Baba, disclosed that the service received a distress call at 3:29 pm. Firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later, at 3:37 pm.

Upon arrival, fire crews successfully rescued two schoolchildren who were trapped inside one of the burning rooms before bringing the flames under control.

The GNFS has officially launched an investigation to establish the cause of the blaze and evaluate the full extent of the property damage.

The late Murtala Mohammed died on 6 August 2025 when a helicopter carrying an official delegation from Accra to the Ashanti Region crashed in the Adansi area.

The fatal crash also claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three crew members.
