Nyonkopa Daniels: Kufour insults are regrettable, but where were apology advocates when IGP, Mahama and others were insulted?

November 20, 2024

Executive Director of Peace Watch Ghana, Madam Nyonkopa Daniels, has asked those demanding an apology from Dela Edem following the disparaging remarks against former President John Agyekum Kufour to bow their heads in shame.

Although she does not endorse or support the unfortunate remarks made against the former president, she described the demand for an apology as hypocritical and selective.

She demanded answers to the whereabouts of all these individuals when some individuals hurled insults at former President John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Inspector General of Police, and others.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow radio 87.5FM, Madam Daniels stated, “As someone who has consistently opposed the politics of insults, I do not endorse the insults hurled at former President John Agyekum Kufour, but those demanding an apology from Dela Edem are hypocrites. Where were they when people insulted former President John Mahama, called him names, and spread lies about him? Where were they when someone mocked his running mate and called her a witch? Where were they when they insulted Dr. George Akuffo Dampare? That’s why I’m calling them hypocritical. Just recently, gospel musician Nicholas Omane Acheampong mocked former President John Mahama, calling him names and describing him as a wizard. That filthy, dirty language was used against Mahama all in the name of politics.

That’s unfortunate. I’m also surprised that when some people start insulting politicians, several Ghanaians can be seen under these posts, encouraging them to do so. If Kwesi was insulted and you praised the person, why should you be concerned that Kwame is being insulted? If you saw nothing wrong with Kwesi’s insult, don’t say anything if Kwame is insulted, and let us all do the right thing. We should all condemn all forms of insults directed at our leaders, whether we support them or not. All those demanding an apology because former President Kufour was insulted should hang their heads in shame. You should be ashamed of yourself because if Kwesi was insulted and you did nothing about it, why are you saying anything now?

She told host Kwabena Agyapong that “you can criticise politicians or leaders if they do something wrong, but insulting them is unhealthy.” Shame on you, people. Insults in our political space must cease immediately. We have a responsibility to raise our children to be responsible so that they do not follow in our footsteps. I will reiterate that all those who called their fellow politicians prostitutes, fools, and other derogatory terms must bow their heads in shame. You spread falsehoods about people, and now it has spread to former President Kufour.”
