Small-scale miners in the Amansie South district, Ashanti Region, claim they are emotionally and psychologically traumatised due to intimidation by security officials, particularly the police.
They claim that these levels of intimidation, extortion, and harassment have negatively affected their sexual performance with their spouses.
During a press conference, Mr. Kwaku Abonee (Osama), a leading member of the Association, stated that the activities of the police are having a detrimental impact on their businesses, health, and overall well-being.
He noted that the current situation is the opposite of what President John Dramani Mahama promised them during the campaign season.
Mr. Abonee reminded President John Dramani Mahama of his 2024 election promises to protect and sustain small-scale mining activities.
He lamented that the current police intimidation, excavator seizures, and burning of equipment contradict the assurances the president and his party gave them during the campaign, which he said motivated them to vote massively for the NDC.
“We are still facing harassment and equipment seizures, particularly in the Amansie South district, where the illegal mining task force remains active,” he stated.
He further questioned, “What wrong have we committed that the police are harassing us? Why are they intimidating us? Their presence here has left our children also traumatised. They are unable to go to school because anytime they see police vehicles driving around here, they become afraid. We are therefore appealing to President Mahama to intervene and have the police deployed here removed. We are unable to sleep. We are unable to perform our sexual duties or sleep with our wives because our manhood cannot rise as expected due to the trauma.”
