Dr. Jones Opoku Ware, a criminologist and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has voiced serious concerns about the Ghana Police Service’s sluggish response to the surge in criminal activities, particularly murder cases. He argues that this delay is enabling perpetrators to cover their tracks.
During an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Dr. Opoku Ware highlighted that the recent “missing but found dead” cases have created an environment of fear among Ghanaians, with the police seemingly looking on helplessly.
He believes that the criminals responsible for these acts are emboldened by the police’s failure to apprehend them.
Dr. Opoku Ware noted that these crimes share similar patterns, and the police’s inability to discern these patterns is leading to an intensification of killings. He warned that if authorities fail to immediately crack down on these criminals, Ghana could face a security crisis.
He further asserted that criminals and “criminally minded thugs” are operating with impunity.
The murder patterns of recent months, he claims, expose a clear weakness in the security systems’ ability to identify these patterns and deploy effective strategies. Dr. Opoku Ware concluded by stating that “these criminals think they can do whatever they want without facing any consequences.”
He told the police that what’s happening is a pattern. “Once there’s a pattern, you’re in the presence of a certain fact,” he stated. “If you have a pattern of murder cases and bodies dumped at specific locations, it tells you there’s a consistency in how a group of people is trying to operate. As a security institution, you have to study that pattern and do your proper pin mapping to lead you to those engaged in the crime. I am not seeking this kind of response from the police.”
