The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has presented a total of GH¢132,000, food items and sanitation tools to flood victims in Avenor, Circle Neoplan Station, North Kaneshie and Bubuashie as part of immediate relief efforts following the recent heavy rains that affected several households and communities in the metropolis.
The total support included GH¢130,000 in direct cash donations to affected communities, an additional GH¢2,000 to a shop owner to vacate a drainway, 31 boxes of cooking oil containing 372 bottles, 120 bags of rice containing 600 pieces of 25 kg bags, eight wheelbarrows and eight shovels to support affected residents and clean-up activities.
At Avenor, the Mayor presented GH¢50,000, 20 boxes of cooking oil, 300 bags of 25kg rice, five wheelbarrows, and five shovels.
At Circle Neoplan Station, Hon. Allotey presented GH¢30,000, four boxes of cooking oil, 75 pieces of 25 kg rice, three wheelbarrows, and three shovels to support flood victims and assist with the clearing of debris from the area.
The Mayor also visited North Kaneshie, including the Swanlake community and Ahonfe Close, where he presented GH¢20,000, four boxes of cooking oil containing 48 bottles and 100 pieces of 5 kg bags of rice to affected residents.
At Bubuashie Attico on Kanto Street in the Bubui Electoral Area, Hon. Allotey presented GH¢30,000, three boxes of cooking oil containing 36 bottles and 125 pieces of 5kg bags of rice, which were received by the community leader, Stella Yanky on behalf of the affected residents.
Speaking during interactions with the victims, Hon. Allotey said the donations were made on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Ernest Adomako, to sympathise with affected residents and help them manage the immediate impact of the disaster.
He said the Assembly had observed the difficulties facing residents, including the destruction of mattresses, cooking utensils, food items and other personal belongings, adding that the AMA would return with additional support after a detailed assessment of affected households had been completed.
Hon. Allotey said the AMA had provided compactors to clear refuse from the affected communities free of charge and had deployed sanitation personnel to support the clean-up exercise, while appealing to residents to stop dumping refuse into gutters and drains because such actions blocked drainage channels and worsened flooding.
He assured residents that the Assembly would continue to work with community leaders and relevant agencies to clear drains, remove obstructions and put measures in place to reduce flooding in the affected areas.
The Mayor urged the affected residents to remain united and cooperate with their community leaders to ensure that the relief items were fairly distributed to those who needed them most.
The Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, Hon. Alfred Asiedu Adjei expressed appreciation to the Mayor, President Mahama, the MP and the AMA for responding to the plight of the people.
He said the rice, cooking oil, cash and sanitation tools would go a long way to support the affected families and help the community begin the process of recovery.
