Member of Parliament for Tamale South and former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu says the blockage of sims has caused some people to their relationships.
The lawyer explained that the situation has caused several people to lose their significant others, with some threatened with possible divorce.
Haruna Iddrisu, speaking on the floor of parliament, stated that the social effects of SIM blocks are critical and must be one of the reasons why such action should be avoided.
“Those whose sims have so been blocked some have suffered relationship problems. Some probably have lost their girlfriends, and contacts with their significant others. Even some have been threatened with divorce – very possible. Because why have you not reached out to him or to her; because your sim has been blocked?”
Ursula Owusu-Ekufu, Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, has revealed that 28,948,142 SIM cards have been fully registered in the recently concluded SIM card re-registration exercise.
She told the House that there are currently 29,947,561 active SIM cards out of the over 49 million SIM cards that were available at the start of the exercise.
“Mr. Speaker, so far, 28,948,142 SIM cards have been fully registered while 999,419 SIM cards have been exempted and so the total active SIM cards are 29,947,561. At the start of the exercise, our information was that there were 42,416,459 SIM cards out of which 7,995,679 have been unregistered and blocked while 4,473,219 SIM cards have been deleted and removed.”
In response to the exercise, the MP stated that Ghanaians, particularly those in remote areas, have faced difficulties and that the Ministry should consider using the Ghana card as the only form of identification for the re-registration exercise.
He said the access to Ghana cards for persons in the hinterlands is not as easy as those in the capital, hence there was a need for intervention from the Ministry.
To the Minister, he said she ought to be the last person who should be discussing the viability and social significance of mobile telephony.
